The Pandreitje is an enchanting street in the historical center of Bruges, Belgium. Once, a branch of the Reie River, known as the Pandreitje, flowed here, but it was filled in 1768. The area was filled with construction debris, and it wasn't until around 1791 that everything was filled and the street could be paved. Three bridges, including the Vlasbrug or Cocquytbrug, disappeared as a result.

The name "Pandreitje" recalls the building erected at the end of the street in 1482, called "Het Pand." This structure served as a covered marketplace for painters and jewelers, hosting annual markets known as the Pandfeesten. Although the bridges and markets are gone, the street still exudes the atmosphere of its historic past.

In the 17th century, a building known as "Het Pand" in Pandreitje served as a marketplace but later transformed into the city prison. In 1861, the prison underwent renovations, lasting until 1989. The street's name became associated with the prison, and saying 'he is in the Pandreitje' meant someone was in jail.

The building was mostly demolished in 1992, except for the gatehouse and director's residence. The front part, with sections from the 17th and 19th centuries, was preserved due to a last-minute protection order. The back of the prison and other 17th-century buildings along Gevangenisstraat were torn down.

The Pandreitje street itself runs from the Rozenhoedkaai to the gatehouse of the former prison and the developed area behind it.

Today, Pandreitje is a charming street with a rich history, inviting you to explore its unique character and surroundings.
